The IOPNA’s new resident outreach program, otherwise known as the Welcome Committee of the IOPNA, has just completed delivering ten gift bags to new IOP residents who arrived on the island between September and December of 2009, kicking off the second year of this successful program. Last year, twenty-five businesses and restaurants contributed to thirty-six gift bags throughout the year. Each gift bag is filled with a variety of information about island living, and are designed to help foster a sense of community among IOP residents, as well as encourage the use of local businesses and restaurants by our citizens.
Five of the contributors to these first ten gift bags for 2010 are repeat contributors from 2009: The Boathouse at Breach Inlet (Lee Cohen, General Manager), Long Island Cafe (Patti and Buddy Thomas, Owners) Splash Clothing and Gifts (Nancy Lauseng, Owner), Taste of China Restaurant (Ann and Richy Ching Tin, Owners), and Salon & Co, (Vicky Friedrichs, Owner). The Welcome Committee appreciates their continued commitment to this program. New to the program and contributing for the first time are the Isle of Palms Marina and Marina Market (Brian and Beth Berrigan, managers) and the Sand Dollar Gift Gallery (Barbara Gobien, owner).
The Committee will continue to help bring attention to local businesses throughout 2010, working to improve the visibility and success of island establishments. One of the committee members, Jackie Huffman, was new to the Isle of Palms last summer. She is now happy to welcome others just as she was welcomed when she moved to the Isle of Palms, helping to foster the same sense of belonging that she felt with the receipt of her first gift bag. Jackie and the other members of the Welcome Committee – Dee Weilbacher, Kathleen Doherty, and Diane Oltorik – are already planning the next set of gift bags for the spring. If you weren’t called upon for this set of gift bags, be prepared to see them very soon!
