Sailing with a real Carolina Girl

By Meredith Powell

The Beach Boys’ California girls have nothing on Captain Bob Murray’s Carolina Girl. Able to accommodate up to 150 guests between its three decks, the Carolina Girl yacht is harbored in West Ashley, right next to the restaurant, Carolina Dreaming. I recently had the pleasure of attending a Customer Appreciation dinner cruise co-hosted by Carolina Girl and Duvall Catering, and it’s a good thing I thought to arrive with a relatively empty stomach!

Upon entering the Carolina Girl, I was graciously greeted by Marketing Director Camille Keil, who explained the layout of the ship. She pointed out that the upper deck is the most relaxed area, with an amazing sea breeze at all times, and that the lower level is best known as the Key West room.

After walking around for a little bit, I found myself drawn back to the dining room where the smell of Duvall Catering’s vast spread of hors d’ oeuvres had my mouth watering: fruits and vegetables with glazes and dips, sushi, beef tenderloin skewers with tzatziki sauce, breads, and chicken salad, and I still had to leave room for a gourmet brownie at the bar in the Key West room.

Along with providing catering services through Duvall Catering, the Carolina Girl offers professional music services through DJ Bobby C and the option of including an historian to guide you and your guests around the historic waters of Charleston harbor.

While the Carolina Girl is “on loan from God, [Captain Bob is] happy to be sailing on her,” and from personal experience, he makes sure every passenger is also happy to be on board.
