Book Club Features Popular: Vintage Wisdom For A Modern Geek

By Connie Darling for Island Eye News

Edgar Allan Poe/Sullivan’s Island Library holds its next book club meeting to discuss Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek by breakout teen author Maya Van Wagenen at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy conversation, coffee and treats.

Stuck at the bottom of the social ladder at school, Maya Van Wagenen decided to begin a unique social experiment: spend the school year following a 1950s popularity guide written by former teen model Betty Cornell. Can curlers, girdles, Vaseline and a strand of pearls help Maya on her quest to be popular?

The real-life results are painful, funny and include a wonderful and unexpected surprise meeting and befriending Betty Cornell herself. Told with humor and grace, Maya’s journey offers readers of all ages a thoroughly contemporary example of kindness and self-confidence.

Stop by the library to check out the book prior to the discussion. Interested attendees are invited to email Connie Darling for book discussion questions. The Edgar Allan Poe/Sullivan’s Island Library, located at 1921 I’On Avenue, Sullivan’s Island, is a branch of Charleston County Public Library. For more information, call 883.3914.
