Sullivan’s Island Named Tree City USA

By Amy Mercer, Island Eye News Editor

In the March Town Council meeting, Mayor O’Neil announced that Sullivan’s Island was recently designated “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation. The Tree City USA program has been “greening up” cities and towns across America since 1976. It’s a nationwide movement that provides the framework for communities to manage and expand their public trees.

The website states that more than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA.

Sullivan’s met the 4 standards of criteria that include: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Town Administrator Andy Benke reported that the South Carolina Department of Transportation began pavement resurfacing and related work on SC703 from the Ben Sawyer Bridge to the County Park on Isle of Palms on Monday, March 6. Additionally, a short section of the road on Jasper Boulevard from Station 30 to the Breach Inlet Bridge will be widened to accommodate bike paths on both sides of the road. The project will require the Town to install several new water lines ahead of this work. Triad Engineering and Contracting has been retained by the Town for the project. Pipeline work will also begin at Station 24. At times both projects will necessitate detours from Jasper Boulevard.

Benke said to expect minor traffic congestion throughout the duration of this project. The project should be completed in early May.

The anticipated roll out of the updated Town website is mid- June. The format and layout was completed by South Carolina Interactive, while pages and content are being built internally.

Tim Reese served on the Municipal Election Commission for Sullivan’s Island and has recently resigned. State statute allows an individual to hold only one appointed or elected office. Additionally, since he was a candidate he felt it more appropriate to step down from the MEC before the election. Under the Town Code of Ordinances, the Mayor may appoint an individual to fill the unexpired term.

Sarah Church, Chair of the Recreation Committee reported that following a very successful year, the 2017 Sullivan’s Island Farmers’ Market will be held every Thursday April 6 through June 29 between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The location will remain in front of the Poe Library. Additional details are available on the Special Events page of the Town website www.sullivansisland-sc.com.
