On Saturday, March 16, the historic USS Yorktown aircraft carrier will host sailors from more than a half-dozen different Navy programs for Navy Day at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.  Special activities will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are included in general admission.  Former and active duty sailors will be free of cost.

In addition to meeting visitors and talking about different departments of the Navy, several crewmembers of the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66) will be in the museum’s Vietnam Experience Exhibit to discuss the ship and the Vietnam War battle it is named for, the Battle of Hue City.

Navy activities offered at Patriots Point to include:

  • History and Heritage Command (Will discuss Charleston Naval History) • USS Constitution Sailors & Equipment
  • Meteorological and Oceanographic Command • Navy Medicine Personnel • Navy Recruitment – Virtual Reality

Navy Day at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is part of Charleston Navy Week organized by the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO).  Navy Weeks are designed to give Americans the opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity.

“Our staff and ships always seem to stand a little straighter when the Navy is back aboard,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette.  “The Navy is responsible for so many roles in defending our great country.  This event is a perfect opportunity for the community to meet the brave men and women who protect us every day and to learn about what they do.”

Charleston is one of 14 different Navy Weeks scheduled across the United States in 2019.

“Having visited Patriots Point and the Yorktown many times growing up in Charleston and Mount Pleasant, I cannot be more excited to have Navy Week come to my home town,” said Lt. John Stevens, Navy Week program manager at the NAVCO.  “Partnering with Patriots Point to educate the community on the Navy is a perfect fit, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to bring the Navy back home to the Lowcountry.”
