Inaugural Front Beach Crawl

By Mimi Wood, Senior Staff Writer for Island Eye News

If the chance to win big while helping a great cause sounds appealing to you, the Isle of Palms Exchange Club has just the ticket. A $100 raffle ticket, to be exact. The purchase of which, in conjunction with the first ever IOP Front Beach Crawl, offers you the chance to win one of four major prizes. Tom Vandenberg, humbly declining the title of “chairman” of the event, explains, “There were about five of us, sitting around, trying to come up with something new. We do the Oyster Roast and the Connector Run; we liked this idea because it affords us the opportunity to support local businesses.” The Crawl begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. In exchange for a $20 entry fee, participants will receive a wristband, and spend the afternoon strolling to and from six participating Front Beach venues: The Dinghy, Acme, The VFW, Luke ’n Ollies, Banana Cabana and, of course, The Windjammer. A smattering of complimentary h’ors d’oeuvres and snacks will be offered at each establishment; the purchase of every beverage earns one a chance to win a door prize from that location. Come 4 p.m., The Windjammer will be a virtual Prize-o-Rama, as the drawings commence with the door prizes and a 50/50, along with live music. The four grand prizes? In a nutshell: an elaborate Sand and Surf Staycation at Wild Dunes (What’s not to like? No travel hassles, no packing; yet forget about the litter box, the laundry and the trash!); America’s Capitol Tour to Washington, DC, including private tours, and meetings with both of South Carolina’s US Senators; a Carolina Panthers Weekend Get-Away with club level seats; and a Golf Cart/IOP Vacation, which includes the title to the pretty, brand-new golf cart currently parked on Palm Blvd, near 4th Ave. Although he wouldn’t disclose the exact odds, “the probability of winning one of the four major prizes is pretty good,” alludes IOP Councilman and Exchange Club member Ted Kinghorn, with a confidential wink. You don’t have to participate in the Front Beach Crawl to buy a raffle ticket, and viceversa. And you don’t have to be present to win…but you’ll miss all the fun. Ask an Exchange Club member, visit any of the participating venues, or go to IOPExchange. org/IOPCrawl for more info, to purchase a raffle ticket, and/or to register for the Crawl. All proceeds help support the programs of the Exchange Club, whose Four Pillars, Kinghorn enumerates, are the “prevention of child abuse; Americanism, especially with regard to supporting veterans; Youth Programs and Scholarship; and Community Service.”
