Skeeter, Defender of the Isle of Palms

In five years of daily beach visits, Skeeter Kelly has never even attempted to dig up a turtle nest. But crabs? Watch out!

Hunley Cook

Hunley Cook

Age: One and a half years
birthplace: Sewanee, TN
hometown: IOP
breed: Boykin spaniel
veterinarian: Dr. Anne Cook (also his owner!)
favorite treat: carrots
favorite toy: Tennis ball

When Hunley is not fetching his beloved tennis ball, he is in his favorite spot at the IOP dog park lounging in the water bin. He and his brothers Harry, the standard poodle, and Hue,y the dapple dachshund, walk to the dog park frequently with their 9 month old “brother” Reed in a stroller. Thanks to Susan Marett’s obedience classes at the IOP Rec center, everyone is generally well-behaved. Their favorite activity is free time on the beach! Hunley and Harry spend their days with Anne at her veterinary ophthalmology office, greeting new patients and owners with wags and a tennis ball.

Paddy Perkis

Name: Paddy Perkis (aka Paddy from the Pound, the Paddister)
Owner(s): Linda and Mike Perkis
Birthplace/hometown: Born in Charlotte, NC, but live on Sullivan’s Island.
Age: 16 ¾ (give or take)
Veterinarian: Dr. Jay Goldsmith – he says I’m currently his oldest canine patient.
Favorite food: I’m a very picky eater – always have been.
Favorite treat: I love to go for rides in the golf cart.

Favorite toy: I’m so beyond toys – at my age, all I require is some food and a comfy bed.

I am such a Lucky Dog! I’m at the beach every morning at sunrise. I get to see and visit with all of my dog friends – especially Waldo and Chester (you know who you are!). I am extremely well taken care of and pampered. I was adopted from the animal shelter in Charlotte, NC, 15 ½ years ago and now I reside full time on the beach. Life is good!

In Memory of George
March 1995–July 18, 2009

By Sis Nunnally, Isle of Palms

George Nunnally

George Nunnally

George came to live with us a little over 2 1/2 years ago. He belonged to a friend that moved out of state and could not take him with her. I was supposed to find George a good home. It took less than a day for me to know that home was with me. He stole my heart. My black labs Karmi and Belle thought he was pretty special too. George had no trouble getting his certification as a therapy dog with TDI, inc. and passing the Canine Good Citizen test. He brought smiles and joy to any one he met.
In 2008 he won “Best Senior” at the Isle of Palms Doggie Day. His vets Scott Senf and Ann Briley at the Animal Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant did a wonderful job helping him live the best life possible as long as possible.
I am very thankful I had the privilege of sharing the last years of this wonderful dog’s life with him. I know I will have many more dogs; however, there will never be another George. He will always have a special place in my heart.

Stella Kerr

Stella Kerr

Name: Stella Kerr
Age: 6 ½ years
Owner(s): Rob, Boo and Robert Kerr
Breed: Golden Retriever

Stella Kerr is a Lucky Dog because she came to Sullivan’s Island as a puppy and has enjoyed 6 ½ years of island living at its best. In addition to having a large backyard and great neighbors, human and canine, she gets to regularly run and play on the beach with her favorite toy – her tennis ball. Stella is also big on community service. Each time she goes to the beach she brings along an extra bag for trash. Stella is the Island’s number one canine litter patrol. She can smell a discarded can across the beach and stand by it until Mom retrieves it. Talk about being able to teach an old Mom new tricks! Thanks to Stella, the Station 23 beach path is litter-free.

Spartacus Adams

Spartacus Adams

NAME: Spartacus
OWNER: Dorothea Adams
BREED: English Bulldog
VETERINARIAN: Animal Medical Center, Dr. Scott Senf
FAVORITE FOOD: My son’s grilled London Broil & Orange sherbet

This is my funny, but wonderful, five yr old English Bulldog, Spartacus. He has such a great personality and loves to play with anything you get for him, but his very favorite toy is a doggie football. He has been with two different families since he was a puppy and both homes were loving, but the folks were getting too busy to keep him company; something I have found he really needs. We go for walks on the beach, leashed of course, and for walks after supper on our street. Everyone who sees him stops and speaks with us and they all seem to know him and remember his name. With his Georgia Bulldog collar on, he stands out to say the least. After losing my female bulldog to old age this past March, Spartacus has brought me so much happiness. I love to hear the “snoring” of this breed; it is delightful.
